It takes less than 2 weeks for life in a country to become a little harder after the a President announces new taxes. Harder even more for the young people that influence their survival, plus those whose businesses depended on social media and miserable a lot for those that have lose their jobs in the process. Especially those who work at mobile money points in areas where the system was been abandoned due to the new taxation policy.
A few years, UGX 100k would be quite enough budget for someone planning to hang out on a Saturday afternoon. But with the prevailing state, 100k is just pocket change. Buy 1 whole fish, a couple of drinks and it’s gone.
A few months ago, President Trump made a statement referring to African countries as “Shit holes” and President Museveni was quick to defend him and emphasize his point. But that was only verbal. Basing on the trend of financial/economic changes since January 2018 (when the shithole statement was made), it looks as though Museveni is on a mission to even emphasize Trump’s point practically.
Reality is that these events are just part of a spiral that began in 1962 when Uganda was declared ‘independent’. It only makes the citizens hungry for a change of leadership and gives the West ( and now China) a chance to again sponsor the next puppet. It’s been going on all over Africa.
I’m oppressed. But joining the riots still doesn’t seem clever to me.
