Racism! “No Blacks. Get A White Man” — Uganda Self Drive Company Tells Black lady

Where as racism should be considered something of the past; an idea that one should be ashamed to associate themselves with in the 21st century, it has instead consistently remained in effect for decades to the extent that people can still shout racist slurs in public places, implement racist company policies and even have the nerve to defend racism on public platforms.

This was the case on Monday 23rd December 2019 in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, when a London based Ugandan black lady only identified as Pai currently back home for holidays decided to rent a car for a trip from a company known as Uganda Self Drive. To her disapointment, she was told that the company’s policy only permits it to deal with white people and the prerequisite for her as a black woman was to come with a white man.

Pai would later post this ordeal on Twitter narrating what she had been told by the company staff. See tweet below

A staff member at the company would later respond to her tweet calling her “very stupid” while insisting that it is the company’s policy and that she should “go and rent from companies which accept blacks”. See tweet below…

The response has since attracted negative reviews for Uganda Self Drive on google which has culminated into the reduction of its overall google ratings from 4.5 stars to 2.0 stars.

What is most significant about this incident is the fact that Uganda Self Drive is using black people to not only discriminate against fellow blacks, but also to tell black women to look for white men in order to access its cars.

It should be noted that Article 21 subsections (1) and (2) of the Constitution of The Republic of Uganda categorically denounce economic descrimination based on one’s race.

It is absurd that the management of Uganda Self Drive has not yet released an official statement to scrapping its racist policy and to give Pai and the entire black community an apology.

It is equally absurd that no state organ has yet come out to put Uganda Self Drive to book for the trauma caused to Pai inspite of the story about the inhumane treatment she received making rounds both on air and online.
